Team: Casagrande & Rintala, Helsinki + Marjetica Potrc, Ljubljana
Place: near Roßstraßenbrücke
Project: I beam bridge to Wallstrasse 84/85

The architects Casagrande & Rintala and the artist Marjetica Potrc are planning a new bridge spanning the Maerkischen Canal, linking the north bank of the canal to the back facade of Wallstrasse 84. From there, the public has access to Wallstrasse by walking through the inner courtyards and halls of the building.

Currently, Wallstrasse 84 is private property in the process of renovation. The owner envisions the building as a center for cultural events and therefore wishes to open part of the property to the public. He plans to use the terrace overlooking the canal as a stage for opera and theater. During the events, the audience will be seated in boats or on the west bank of the canal, facing the terrace.

Three ideas typical for Berlin coincide here and are emphasized by the bridge: an interest in culture, urban waterways, and inner courtyards. In this sense, the bridge is a minor intervention that emphasises already existing aspects of the site. By linking the north canal bank with the Wallstrasse 84, the bridge accentuates the building's public character and makes possible public access to its inner courtyards and halls. A floating platform located under the bridge serves as a performance stage and gives boats access to the embankment. In the larger context of contemporary city, it is a reminder of the shifting border between public and private space, which has lately shifted in favor of private space. The bridge is thus testing the creative border between private and public space in Berlin.
