In the autumn of 2002, a selection committee of design experts chose twelve design proposals for bridges crossing the Spree River in Berlin. The task was to define the term "bridge" at its specific location and to redesign the selected bridges as places of communication.

The projects were developed in interdisciplinary teams of artists, architects, and engineers. Special emphasis was placed on the collaborative development of ideas and not the traditional task sharing of "architect=draft," "engineer=construction," and "artist=decor."

Several of the projects will be implemented in the summer of 2003.
