Place: Rathaus Bridge
Project: Erection of a new bridge

The project team consisting of the architect Paulo Providência, the engineer Rosemarie Wagner, and the artist Volker Lang has developed a new design for a footbridge that will run parallel to the Rathaus Bridge. The proposal provides for a bridge of seventy stone elements that rises in the middle. Nineteen blocks on either side make up the lower steps, while the 36 inner blocks form a homogenous arch.

The new footbridge will re-establish the connections to the urban surroundings - Friedrichstraße and the Palace Square to the west, the Nikolai Quarter to the south-east, and the Marx-Engels Forum as well as the Berlin Cathedral to the north-east. While the current Rathaus Bridge possesses no formal qualities whatsoever and is not commensurate with the historically significant location, the new footbridge will link Berlin's historic centre. The western bank will be architecturally returned to the situation that existed before the Palace of the Republic was built; the river frontage on the eastern side will be continued under the bridge.

Furthermore, the bridge is conceived as an observation platform for passers-by, tourists, workers, and residents and is therefore designed as an arch bridge. The bridge is also intended as a place for concerts and theatre performances. Volker Lang has developed a pantomime specifically for the bridge: Nine actors form three groups (ABC, ABC, ABC) and cross the bridge within an allocated area. The moments the actors come to a standstill are captured by coloured marks.

The stone blocks of the bridge's material refer to the developed surroundings, which are or have been characterised by monumental structures (e.g., the Berlin City Palace).
