Team: muf architecture/art, London + Sissel Tolaas, Berlin
Place: Jannowitz Bridge
Project: migration, occupation, ownership and identity

Following comprehensive local research, the architecture office muf architecture/art and the artist Sissel Tolaas developed an interactive project for the Jannowitz Bridge, whose "partners" will be the neighbours, tourists, demonstrators, and passers-by. They relate the Jannowitz Bridge to the lakes Wannsee and Müggelsee because, as they see it, the city centre cannot be understood isolated from its periphery.

Unlike the lakes, the Jannowitz Bridge is not a place to linger but a place of passage, despite the existing boarding dock for excursion boats. Against this background, they have planned diverse on-site interventions that intend to shake up the expectations people have with regard to the location: A snack bar will be set up on the steps leading down to the "Stern und Kreisschifffahrt" boarding dock, which will offer exquisite Chinese food at low cost (thanks to subventions). A colourful and illuminated wall behind the snack bar will have an inviting effect. The steps will be covered in wood. On the southern bank, large mirrors will fracture the sunlight, illuminating dark areas on the bank. The undeveloped properties on the northern bank of the Spree will be planted with jasmine. Fans and the wind will circulate the pleasant aromas of food and plants.

The interventions refer directly to the following aspects of the location: Chinese Embassy, boarding dock, S-Bahn underpass, apartment blocks - previously for privileged GDR citizens, the Jannowitz Center, the open spaces, and the airspace. Influenced by recent history and its resulting heterogeneous buildings and open spaces, this place of passage becomes the site of a microcosm with amenities that is entirely unexpected.

A corresponding satellite project is planned for Müggelsee.
