In the autumn of 2003 twelve proposals by international artists, architects and engineers emerged from a competition financed by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (federal cultural foundation).
A prestigious advisory committee selected seven projects for realisation, four of which will be presented in May 2004 at the Spree.

An invitation to tender was the genesis of the competition, that offered existing, planned and visionary bridges along the River Spree to be transformed into places of communication.
