Lab architecture studio was founded in 1994 in London, UK
by the architects Peter Davidson and Donald L. Bates. Since
1997 it is located in Melbourne.
Donald Bates graduated from the University
of Houston in 1978. In 1980 he received the MA at the Cranbrook
Academy of Art (supervisor: Daniel Libeskind). He acted as
associate architect to Libeskind on the Jewish Museum project
in Berlin. He taught at the Architectural Association (1983-1989,
1993-1995) and founded the independent architectural school,
the Laboratory of Primary Studies in Architecture (LoPSiA)
in 1990, operating in Paris and at the Le Corbusier Unité
d'habitation at Briey-en-Forêt.
Peter Davidson graduated from the
NSW Institute of Technology in Sydney in 1980. After moving
to London in 1981, he was appointed editorial assistant on
the journal International Architect. He ran his own practice
for ten years whilst simultaneously teaching at various institutions,
including the AA and Bartlett School of Architecture.
Projekte (Auswahl): Finalists in
the Wagga Wagga Civic Centre competition (1995), Future Generations
University (1996), and the National Gallery of Australia (2000)
to name a few. Since winning the Federation Square project
in 1997, they have been located in Melbourne, Australia.
